Roman Sebrle steped out of the shadow
A long time, he was the crown prince of Tomas Dvorak. But last year, it was the time, Roman Sebrle steped out of the shadow of his countryman. The 27 Year old Czech is the first decathlet who beat the 9000 Points in the Decathlon. It was a memorable day, this 27th may in Götzis, which is regarded since decades as a excellent place for the decathlon, many kilometers far away from this small village in Austria. With 9026 points took the guy from Dukla Prag Tomas Dvorak the world rekord away from under his nose and wrote sports history.
For Tomas Dvorak meant the triumpf of Sebrle, who used to be his trainingspartner, a very difficult situation.
But he was not very surprised. "I thought already years ago, that Roman would be one day the best decathlet all over the world and now he is", said the former "king of the athletes." But in spite of Dvorak winning after a long break of injury in Edmonton his third world championship-title and celebrating a gigantic comeback, his lifedream of being the first man, who make the 9000 points, is broken. Its not possible anymore. And this was the point, the two former friends didn`t want to work together anymore. Meanwhile the new worldrecordholder seperated from the trainingsgroup in Prag and tried to find another solution.
Two successfully decathletes in one group is one to many. And because Zdenek Vana, the coach, is the father in law of Tomas Dvorak, it was clear, who had to go.
In the Olympicyear 2000 Sebrle already had a lot of bad luck. Because of a strange decision from a judge in the discusevent - Erki Nool the later winner got three failed attempts first, but after a protest he got 43,66 m - Sebrle missed the Gold at the end because of only 35 points.
At the World Championships in Edmonton one year later he was injured and had no chance to win the title. After Edmonton he had an operation.
But in the private life he was very happy. Two weeks after the Olympic Games he maaried his gril-friend. Eva Kasalova, a 800 m runner woh had a best mark of 2:02,79 min.
Meanwhile the modellathlet put these setbacks in the sports away. If somebody is successfully, he can be relaxed about a lot of things. Even he was very disappointed about a lot of things they happened at this time. And the relation to Tomas Dvorak now is quite cool and very distanced. But in the sports both are very respectful to each other.
Roman Sebrle came to terms with the situation and made new deals. Now he works together with his new coach, Dalibor Kupka, a former 400 m hurdles runner, who`s best mark was something under 51 seconds. And it seems that the changes are not bad for the 1,86 m tall athlet, who is one of eleven embassadors for the European Championships in Munich in August. At the Indoor European Championships in Vienna the Czech presented a great form and catched the title in the heptathlon. Second was Tomas Dvorak. "The indoor Europeans were very important form me and I wanted win gold", the 27 year old decathlet said. Whe he was a teenager, the experts predicted him a great future as a footballplayer. He played in the youthteams of one of the most traditional clubs in the Czech Republik, Dukla Prag. But nevertheless, he wanted to do athletics. He made a decision for athletics, specially for the decathlon. The darkhaired young man with strong results in the sprint and the long jump und no worth mentioning weakness, became better an better from year to year.
1996 he made the jump to the 8000 points the first time. Five years later he went on the top of the world. And in a new dimension.
Beside the second place in Sydney a big success was the heptathlon-title at the indoor world championships in Lisboa 2001.
His basis for this season Roman Sebrle got in South-Africa. From the middle of January until the middle of February, he prepared himself for new brilliant results. After the indoor season, he prefers Hungary to go in a trainingscamp. "In spring I like to go in Trainingscamps in Europe because the acclimatisation is easier. The change from Africa to Europe when I came to Vienna was quite difficult for me", he said. But nobody noticed that. He was really fit. Even he was not good enough to catch the world record. At the end he missed the performance clearly.
Beside the European Championships in Munich the "king of decathlon has more goals in 2002. "I want to do the Grand Challenge Series", plans Sebrle. Götzis of course is one part in that serie. And this is as everybody now, an excellent place for him. And one thing is a fact: once again will glide the magic Number of 9000 over the stadion.
