German Women Team in Munich
In Budapest four years ago, Grit Breuer was the star of the German women team. She was responsable for two Goldmedals in the 400 Meter and the 4 x 400 Meter relay. This year the 30 years old athlete from Magdeburg was injured the biggest part of the season and even she herself doesn`t know a lot about her shape.

But even the situation is very unsure, she wants to fight for a medal. Beside the 4 x 400 meter relay the German female athletes hope to get a medal in the 4 x 100 meter also. The biggest competitors will be France and Russia and maybe the British girls. In the 200 meter maybe Gabi Rockmeier will have a good chance to run for one of the places in front. After her injury at the German Championships, it depends how Sina Schielke had handled the whole affair, but it will be diffucult for her to win a medal in the 100 meter.
To reach the final
The big goal for the German middle and long distance runners means: to reach the final. Claudia Gesell, Ivonne Teichmann in the 800 meter, Kathleen Friedrich in the 1500 meter and Melanie Schulz in the 5000 meter will run to participate in the final.
In the marathon Sonja Oberem has some hope to win a medal. Her chances will depend on the development of the race.
If Kirsten Bolm could keep her good shape from the last weeks, she will be a secret favorite for a medal in the 100 meter hurdle race.
Heike Drechsler again?
In the long jump Olympic Champion Heike Drechsler has a few competitors, who could disturb her dream to become once more European Champion. But she is a penomenon and nobody would wonder, if she would win her next title.
In the pole vault everything is possible. The biggest competitor of the three German girls, Annika Becker, Yvonne Buschbaum and Carolin Hingst will be the Russian European Recordholder, Swetlana Feofanowa, who jumped 4,78 meter, after Annika Becker improved the record of Feofanowa in Wattenscheid at the 7th of July.
Astrid Kumbernuss and Nadine Kleinert are both expected to fight for a medal in the shot put. In the discus and javelin throw everything could happen. Hopefully Franka Dietzsch in the discus and Steffi Nerius (javelin) will be in good health.
Sabine Braun says Goodbye
In the heptathlon Sabine Braun has very good chances to win a medal. Even she lost her number one position in Europe, when the 19 year old Swedish girl Carolina Klüft from a small city in the south of Sweden won the Junior-Worldchampion-Title in Kingston in the new Junior-Worldrecord of 6470 points. This result makes her to one of the favorites in Munich. But Sabine Braun, who wants to make her last heptathlon in her career at this European Championships wants to give the last energy to win the crown one more time.
