Top British athletes at the European Championships
The Olympic stadium in Munich can look forward to welcoming major names. The British and the French Athletic Federation have named their prospective teams for the European Championships in Munich (6-8 August). Both nations will arrive with their top stars to the continental title event.

The British team will be lead by the experienced world record holder Colin Jackson (110 m hurdles), Jonathan Edwards (triple jump) as well as the three times European champion in javelin Steve Beckley. Jackson and Edwards, an ambassador of the European Championships, will start as top favourites of their disciplines in the Bavarian capital. However, even the sprinters from the UK have big plans. They will certainly set the mark for a leading position over the short distances. Dwain Chambers, who won against world record holder Maurice Greene (USA) on two occasions this summer, will set his mark together with title holder Darren Campbell and Junior World Champion Mark Lewis-Francis over the 100 metre distance. Meanwhile, two-time starter Campbell will run twice the distance with Marlon Devonish and Christian Malcolm. The group of men, who also won the European Cup in Annecy in June, have more prospective winning candidates among them. For example, Daniel Caines, rival of the German runner-up in the World Championship Ingo Schultz over 400 metres or Chris Rawlinson who came fifth in the 400 metre hurdles in the World Championships.
Double starts by Holmes and Radcliffe
The runners are the focus in the women's team. Olympic third, Kelly Holmes, will run in both the 800 and 1,500 metres as well as Paula Radcliffe, who has set her sights on the 5,000 and 10,000 metre European Championship title. She will probably have to fight twice against the Irish title holder Sonia O'Sullivan. Ashia Hansen has witnessed a successful come back in triple jump this year after facing many problems. The likeable indoor European title holder from Vienna will face strong East European competition in Munich and intends to win a major coup at this event.
