400 Metres

Despite his age of 27 coming into the European Championships, Schultz is a relative newcomer to athletics. He was a surprise silver medallist at the Edmonton World Championships with a time of 44.66. Only two other Germans (Erwin Skamrahl and Thomas Schönlebe) have ever run faster.
Social contacts during his early army days in Hamburg led him to participate in that city's marathon race in 1997, his first-ever running competition. Eventually he settled on the 400 metres as the event in which to specialize. His first organized outing at that distance was a 52.45 result in May 1998.
Despite his international achievement last year, it was only this summer that he was able to win his first national 400m title with his splendid wire-to-wire 44.97 clocking in early July.
Schultz's 2.01m height and long stride provide him with indispensable tools for achieving his fast times.
