1500 metres
Born: 3 August 1977 in Sant Rem
Residence: Lisbon
Only a few days after his 21st birthday, Silva won the silver medal in the 1500 in the last European Championships in Budapest.
Much of his career success has been indoors. Twice (1998 and 2002) he has been European Indoor Champion, and he won the World Indoor title last year in his home city of Lisbon.
At 3000 metres, he was second in the 2000 European Indoor Championships in Ghent.
Silva’s personal best of 3:30.07 came from his win at this year’s Herculis meeting in Monaco. Only three other Europeans (record-holder Fermin Cacho, Steve Cram, and Sebastian Coe) have ever run faster.
You’ve won gold in the last two major indoor championships. With a silver medal in Budapest four years ago, it would seem as if gold in Munich would be the only really satisfying result for you. What are you expecting?
