The Polish team for the European Championships, which was announced last weekend at the end of the national championships in Szczecin, will be led by defending Olympic champions Kamila Skolimovska, Szymon Ziolkowski and Robert Korzeniowski.

Amongst the women, hammer thrower Kamila Skolimovska together with pole-vaulter Monika Pyrek who came third in the World Championships in Edmonton, is the best known competitor with medal ambitions. Another medal hopeful is the 1500 metre runner and fifth at the Worlds, Lidia Chojecka. She is coming with her latest credentials, runner-up of the European cup held in Annecy. The men's team also comprises some aspiring medal winners. The European indoor champions, Pawel Czapiewski, Marcin Urbas and Marek Plawgo would love another go at gold. The favourite in the 50 kilometre walk is the double Olympic gold medallist and world champion Robert Korzeniowski. On the other hand, the hammer thrower Szymon Ziolkowski is not one of the favourites this time as he has failed so far this summer even to reach the 80 metre mark. However, the German hammer thrower, Karsten Kobs, gives a warning about the Olympic and World champion: "In major competitions he is always the one to watch. Also taking part in Munich in the 400 metres hurdles is defending champion Pawel Januszewski. Surprisingly, the Polish have problems with the 400 metres, where initially they had no individual runner but 5 relay runners were nominated including Robert Mackowiak, runner-up in the European Championships 1998.
